December 1862, when May's handful of recruits entered Kentucky, two
partially
formed cavalry companies were already operating on the border
Composed
primarily of Floyd County men, Captain Edwin Trimble's company
was
specifically placed under May's command. The addition of Captain George
R.
Diamond's Pike County volunteers immediately increased May's force to
squadron
strength.
Twenty-four
year old Trimble, the son of one of Prestonsburg's leading
citizens,
had settled in Bexar County, Texas, before the war. With a series of
Indian
adventures behind him, the young Kentuckian returned to his native
Mountains
after Fort Sumter only to find that neutrality and not secession rule
the
hour. He promptly joined the Confederate Army for service in the Kanawha
Valley
in General John B. Floyd's command.
Trimble
returned to Kentucky during the winter of 1861-62 and joined the
5th
Kentucky Infantry before the Battle of Middle Creek. Serving as first lietenant
of Company E, the promising young officer became so popular that he
was
authorized to recruit a new company of his own on or about September 23
1862.
Trimble held together many of the 12 months men from Company E.
