History of 14th Kentucky Infantry-Union
Troops
"The 14th Kentucky Infantry was organized in Oct 1861, at
Louisa, Kentucky,
under Colonel Laban T. Moore, and mustered into the United States
service on the
10th of Dec, 1861, by Lt. C. B. Throckmorton, 4th United States
Artillery,
Mustering Officer.
From Louisa it marched
to Ivy Mountain and Middle Creek, Kentucky, on the Virginia border, and had a
severe engagement with the enemy at each place. After scouting in Eastern Ky for
some time, it was ordered to Cumberland Gap to join General George W. Morgan's
Division. It remained at the Gap until Sep 1862, and was in the perilous march
from that point to the Ohio River, through the mountains of Kentucky, with
General Morgan in his retreat.
In this retreat the arduous duties assigned the 14th were performed
to the
entire satisfaction of the Commanding General, and reflected great
credit upon
the officers and men.
From Greenupsburg it
marched to Louisville, and from there to Danville, Kentucky, via Lexington.
After remaining at Danville for a short time it was ordered to Eastern Kentucky,
and Colonel George W. Gallup assigned
to the command of the District, and, by the prompt, efficient, and
energetic
manner in which he conducted the affairs of his district, the people
once more
enjoyed protection from the frequent incursions of Marshall's
forces, and
earnestly petitioned that Colonel Gallup and his gallant command
should be
permanently located in that section. But the campaign of General
Sherman against
Atlanta demanding all the available forces, the 14th was ordered to
Chattanooga,
and participated in all the engagements incident thereto.
It has participated in the following named battles, in which loss
was sustained,
viz: Ivy Mountain, Middle Creek, and Salyersville, Kentucky; Lost
Mountain,
Georgia; Laurel Mountain, Virginia; New Hope Church, Kenesaw,
Peachtree Creek, Cass Station, and Jonesboro, Georgia; Johnsonville, Tennessee;
Atlanta and
Marietta, Georgia.
It was mustered out at Louisa, Kentucky, Jan 31st, 1865, the
veterans and
recruits being transferred to the 14th Kentucky Veteran
Infantry."
